Stuart Elway is one of the most respected public opinion pollsters in the Northwest and the founder of the long-running Elway Poll, Washington’s only continuous statewide survey for more than three decades.

H. Stuart Elway has been measuring and analyzing public opinion since 1975. As president of Elway Research, Inc., for governmental agencies at all levels from the US Navy to every city in Central Puget Sound; major corporations from American Airlines to Microsoft; media outlets from the Aberdeen Daily World to al Jazeera; non-profit organizations from the Columbia River Bio-Region Campaign to the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; associations from The Las Vegas Realtor Association to the Washington Medical Association; and foundations from Ford to Gates
He directed the Seattle Times Washington Poll from 1984 to 2000 and started The Elway Poll in 1992, a non-partisan, independent analysis of public opinion in the Northwest, which became the Cascade PBS|Elway Poll from 2018 through 2025.
Elway has appeared or been quoted on every national television network and nearly every major daily newspaper and magazine in the country. His work has been featured in Governing magazine (twice), and on the Pew Center for the States website. In the 2016 election cycle, Elway Research was one of only 6 pollsters in the country with an “A+” rating from Nate Silver’s fivethirtyeight.com.
Elway holds a Ph.D. in Communications and has taught in the graduate public affairs programs at both the University of Washington and The Evergreen State College and has been an Affiliated Research Associate at Heritage University.
